Ubuntu 11.04 choppy or slow

I was having this issue when I first upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10 yesterday. It was really odd, cause I was only running Chrome and Netbeans - didn't make much sense.

Anyways, I eventually figured out that it was something to do with OpenGL (with some help from others).

Here are the steps I took to improve the performance:

  1. Install CompizConfig Settings Manager from either the Software Center, or Synaptic.
  2. Click on the Composite tab, and un-check Detect refresh rate.
  3. Back to main menu.
  4. Click on the OpenGL tab.
  5. Uncheck Sync to Vblank.

This should fix the choppy or slow issue significantly, if not completely. Although, if you have a very slow computer, that won't entirely fix it.

For you who are having problems installing the compizconfig, open the terminal (ctrl + alt + T) and write

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

When done, type

ccsm

and you will be able to continue at step 2!

For anyone who stumbles upon the same problem shared by cobra and myself:

Download the software through Synaptic; Synaptic will alert you that a secondary file is necessary to install.

I installed both files simultaneously and quickly.

I'm having trouble installing Compiz. The Software Center has the following complaint:

"Package dependencies cannot be resolved"

with the following details:

"The following packages have unmet dependencies:

simple-ccsm"

I've tried installing Simple Compiz, bit I runt into the exact same roadblock. No luck with Synaptic, either.

Any suggestions?

@jondeveloper Thanks for the hint on Ubuntu 11.04 slowdown. I've installed Compiz and made the changes. I hope this also resolves my issues.

Thanks for this post. I have a relatively fast pc, but I could feel the choppiness. Now it is sensibly faster. I wonder how you figured it out. I was trying to fix it since the upgrade, but to no avail. Thanks a lot.
