Getting your foot in the door as a Project Manager

I've been thinking about doing this for awhile now, but it's involved a lot of procrastination on my part. As I'm sure there are many more people out there that have the same interest, I thought I'd write a quick article on my findings.

First and foremost, you're going to need some sort of 'project' experience - whether you worked on a project, or had any involvement with one. Here's a list of the experience 'flow' you'll need to get into each position:

  1. Project Work
  2. Team Leader on Project
  3. Junior Project Coordinator
  4. Project Coordinator
  5. Junior Project Manager
  6. Project Manager
  7. Program Manager / PMO Director

That's just an idea of what they 'might' be looking for; but most companies will also want you to have some sort of certification. The top certs from an IT point of view are as follows:

  • PMP (need 3600 hours to qualify for this)
  • Scrum Master

It'll look really good on you if you have 1 or more of those - shows that you took the initiative, and that you're really interested in improving yourself. This also makes you that much more of an asset.

Well what if you have all that? Next step I'd take is to contact some agencies, and see if they can line you up with some interviews. It'd be best to start off with the junior positions. And the first thing an agent might say, is that you need to improve your resume to highlight all your 'project' experience and/or leadership. If you have experience with methodologies, that's a huge bonus as well.

Hope this helps someone out.

@Jack, I'm sorry that my article (or journal entry) struck such a sensitive nerve. I wrote it more based on my 'findings' rather than my experience in the industry.

I'll be sure to add some links to give it more 'meat'.

Why would you post an article about project management and the first thing you say is it's something you're thinking about doing as opposed to giving advice on how to do it. This should be more of a journal entry than a useful articles... at least post some links to useful information. What a complete waste of time. No meat, not even a complete potato to sink your teeth into.
